Six-element Gauss-type macro with a floating close-range correction group, reaching 1:2 on its own and 1:1 with an extension tube. Very high resolution and hard, documentary-style contrast from infinity to close-up, with a deeply recessed front element that acts as its own hood. The 310-degree focus throw is superb for precise pulls, though the lens extends and breathes heavily as it focuses. Launched in AI-S form at the end of 1979, ahead of the rest of the series.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. Used as the insert/tabletop lens in Nikkor kits; check copies for oil on the aperture blades and stiffened focus grease, the well-known faults of this model.
