Eight elements in six groups, an optical layout that dates back to the 1965 35mm f/2 and ran through five generations. Sharp and contrasty in the centre at f/2 with some mid-frame astigmatism and flare growing toward the edges. It has no close-range correction, which actually keeps distant background blur looking natural. Focus throw is 120 degrees.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. A lighter, cheaper alternative to the 35/1.4 that matches the 52mm-front lenses in the set; works well on a focal reducer for S35.
