The lens that introduced Nikon's close-range correction, with a 9-element design carried unchanged from the 1977 AI version into the AF era. Centre sharpness is good at f/2.8, while contrast drops and coma flare creeps in toward the edges until around f/5.6. Small, light and consistent across focus distances; throw is roughly 80 degrees in the Nikon direction.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. Cheap and plentiful, so it is a common starting point for a budget Nikkor video kit; AI and AI-S copies share the same optics.
