Descended from the first 35mm f/1.4 for an SLR, this 9-element design with close-range correction stays remarkably small with a 52mm filter thread. At f/1.4 coma flare lays a soft glow over a detailed image, and by f/4 to f/5.6 it turns high-contrast and crisp, so it is effectively two looks in one lens. It has a 9-blade aperture that stops at f/16 and a 105-degree focus throw.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. One of the most sought-after lenses for AI-S cine sets and accepts the full Duclos/Simmod treatment; early pre-AI copies can have yellowed thoriated glass, which the AI-S does not.
