The AI-S 28/2.8 is a different, better lens than the AI version: eight elements with close-range correction, about one percent barrel distortion and a 20cm minimum focus giving roughly 1:3.9 magnification. Edges soften from sagittal coma wide open and clear by f/5.6, while flare and vignetting are well controlled. The 170-degree focus throw is unusually long for a wide prime, which makes it pleasant to pull by hand.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. Make sure a copy is the AI-S (0.2m close focus marking) rather than the 7-element AI or the Series E, which perform noticeably worse.
