The third and last 55mm for the system, an eight-element, seven-group design in the late rubber-grip barrel, and the sharpest of the three. It is roughly a 28mm equivalent on 6x7 film and still a genuine wide on 65mm-class digital sensors. The preceding SMC Pentax 6x7 55/4 (1979 to 1986) is a nine-element lens listed at 615g that focuses to 0.4m; both take 77mm filters. Rendering is modern and even, with the big image circle giving very clean corners on smaller formats.

What it goes on

The 84.95mm flange leaves room to adapt it to practically anything, including PL. The huge image circle makes it a favourite on tilt/shift adapters and on Alexa 65/LF and RED Monstro VV; focal reducers such as the Kipon Baveyes turn it into a faster, wider full-frame lens. The aperture is driven by a lever, so use an adapter with iris control or lock the lens to manual stop-down.
