Breech-lock era lens with a hand-ground aspherical element and floating group, first shown as the FD 55mm f/1.2 AL in 1971. Its optical formula is closely related to the K35 55 mm, which is why it is one of the most expensive FD lenses and a common rehousing donor. Rendering is sharper and cleaner at f/1.2 than the ordinary 55mm f/1.2 S.S.C., with a characteristic warm cast.

Breech-lock mount: the silver locking ring turns, not the lens. Usually rehoused or EF-converted for cinema use; any FD-to-mirrorless adapter works unmodified.

  EdMika FD-EF conversion kit (no glass). FD sits 2 mm closer than EF, so a plain adapter loses infinity and glass adapters soften the image. The accepted fix is replacing the mount (EdMika) — or using a mirrorless body, where FD adapts trivially.
