Seven-element double-Gauss that Canon used as the colour reference for the rest of the FD line. Low-contrast and slightly hazy at f/1.4, properly sharp from f/2.8. The earlier S.S.C. breech-lock version (55 mm thread, 305 g) is optically the same family with a heavier all-metal barrel.

What it goes on

Tube adapter to any mirrorless mount. EF conversions exist, but converters list the New FD 50 mm f/1.4 as live-view-only on full-frame DSLRs because of mirror clearance.

  EdMika FD-EF conversion kit (no glass). FD sits 2 mm closer than EF, so a plain adapter loses infinity and glass adapters soften the image. The accepted fix is replacing the mount (EdMika) — or using a mirrorless body, where FD adapts trivially.
