The most famous manual Nikkor: a five-element, four-group Xenotar-type design that replaced the original Sonnar formula in 1971 and unchanged optically through the AI-S version, which adds a built-in telescoping hood. Sharp from wide open with gentle, uncluttered out-of-focus rendering and good flare resistance. Focus throw is 140 degrees to a 1m minimum.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. Inexpensive, robust and a 52mm front like the small primes, so it slots into a set without extra rings; very effective on a focal reducer as a roughly 75mm f/1.8 equivalent on S35.
