Six elements in four groups, an Ernostar-derived fast tele. Nikon deliberately left some spherical aberration and coma at close range so backgrounds dissolve smoothly, while distant subjects stay crisp. It is a heavy 860g lens with 9 blades, a built-in hood and a long 200-degree focus throw; expect some longitudinal colour fringing at f/2.

What it goes on

F-mount's 46.5mm flange takes a thin glassless adapter to Canon EF and adapts to every mirrorless mount; the aperture ring is fully mechanical and easy to de-click. Front-heavy on small mirrorless bodies, so use lens support with a follow focus; the 72mm thread matches the 85/1.4 and 180/2.8 for shared filters.
