Soviet recomputation of the pre-war Zeiss Sonnar 85/2 (7 elements in 3 groups), first made in 1951 for rangefinders and later in M42 for Zenit SLRs, with the M42 version mostly from LZOS. The 15-blade preset iris stays circular at every stop, so highlights remain round; wide open there is a gentle glow over a reasonably sharp core. Quality control was erratic and badly reassembled copies with focus shift or misaligned helicoids are common, so test before buying.

What it goes on

Glassless M42 adapter to EF or mirrorless. The preset aperture is stepless and the 15 round blades make iris pulls look clean on video. Make sure you buy the M42 SLR version — the M39 rangefinder and Kiev/Contax versions have different registers. Rehoused by IronGlass as the 85 mm of its Soviet set.

  M42-EOS flanged ring. Cheap and common. Pick a flanged ring that presses the auto-aperture pin. On full-frame EF DSLRs a few lenses (Helios 44-2, some Takumars) can catch the mirror at infinity.
