A 4-element/3-group recalculation of the Zeiss Sonnar 135/3.5, light for a 135 and sharp from wide open. The 12-blade preset iris keeps out-of-focus highlights circular at all stops. The 'A' suffix means the Soviet interchangeable-tail system: the rear mount unscrews and can be swapped (M42 tail is the usual one); MC versions appeared around 1980 and the later Jupiter-37AM is a lighter revision. Sources disagree on production years, so none is given.

What it goes on

Supplied with an M42 'A' tail, so a glassless M42 adapter to EF or mirrorless works; check the tail's set screws are tight, as a loose tail causes rotation and infinity errors. The stepless preset aperture suits video, and the lens is a common candidate for oval-aperture anamorphic-look mods. IronGlass sells cine-modded copies.

  M42-EOS flanged ring. Cheap and common. Pick a flanged ring that presses the auto-aperture pin. On full-frame EF DSLRs a few lenses (Helios 44-2, some Takumars) can catch the mirror at infinity.
