The fast 35 of the Soviet line: 8 elements in 7 groups, 6-blade iris, made by KMZ in M42 (the Nikon-mount Mir-24N came from Arsenal in Kyiv). Wide open it is hazy with glowing highlights and soft corners, tightening up well by f/4; MC copies handle flare better than the early single-coated ones. Filmmakers like it because it closes the gap between the Mir-1B and Helios 44-2 with a matching warm, imperfect look at f/2.

What it goes on

This is an auto-aperture M42 lens with a stop-down pin: use a flanged adapter that depresses the pin or flip the A/M switch, otherwise the iris stays wide open. The aperture ring is clicked, so video users usually have it declicked. Glassless adaptation to EF and all mirrorless mounts; IronGlass rehouses it in the MKII Soviet set.

  M42-EOS flanged ring. Cheap and common. Pick a flanged ring that presses the auto-aperture pin. On full-frame EF DSLRs a few lenses (Helios 44-2, some Takumars) can catch the mirror at infinity.
