An original Soviet 4-element/3-group telephoto design (not a Zeiss copy) famous for its 20-blade preset iris, which stays essentially circular at any stop. Rendering is smooth with slightly lowered contrast and a touch of glow at f/2.8, and it has a slide-out built-in hood. The 'A' denotes the interchangeable-tail mount system, normally fitted with an M42 tail. Heavy, all-metal and with a long focus throw.

What it goes on

Glassless M42 adapter to EF or any mirrorless mount; as with other 'A' lenses, make sure the removable tail is secured. The stepless preset ring and 20 round blades give very clean iris pulls on video. IronGlass offers a full MKII rehousing (T2.9).

  M42-EOS flanged ring. Cheap and common. Pick a flanged ring that presses the auto-aperture pin. On full-frame EF DSLRs a few lenses (Helios 44-2, some Takumars) can catch the mirror at infinity.
