East Germany's premium double-Gauss normal lens: 6 elements in 4 groups at launch, recomputed to 6 in 5 groups in 1967. Early 'zebra' copies are single-coated and some use thorium glass that yellows with age (it can be cleared with UV light) and gives a warmer, lower-contrast image; the later all-black MC version is more neutral and contrasty. Six straight blades produce hexagonal highlights when stopped down, and it focuses to 0.35 m.

What it goes on

Auto-aperture M42 lens with an A/M switch, so any glassless adapter works once set to M; 'electric' versions add contacts that are irrelevant when adapted. Simple adapters to EF and every mirrorless mount, and it pairs well with a focal reducer on Super 35. Also made in Exakta and Praktica B mounts, which need different adapters.

  M42-EOS flanged ring. Cheap and common. Pick a flanged ring that presses the auto-aperture pin. On full-frame EF DSLRs a few lenses (Helios 44-2, some Takumars) can catch the mirror at infinity.
